Decatur, Georgia History and Landmarks

Located in Northern DeKalb County, Georgia, Decatur established in 1823 and was named after Stephen Decatur, who was an American naval hero of the War of 1812. Originally the town was a trading center for farmers and there was also stone quarrying in the area as well, with granite being abundant in the area.  Just North of Decatur is the worlds largest piece of granite-- Stone Mountain, whihc stands at more than 800 feet, and has a Civil War Memorial carved in its side.  In the carving are the likenesses of: General Robert E. Lee, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson as well as the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis.  In recent years with memorials being challenged there is a move afoot to have the carving blasted off the side of the mountain.  The carving was begun in 1924, however little work was completed over a dispute, until 1964 when the project was picked up again unde Walker Kirkland Hancock.  The carving was completed in the mountain and it was dedicated in 1970.  Today Stone Mountain stands as certainly Atlanta's greatest natural wonder, and boasts a theme park and has a laser show that is run during the warmer months.
