History of Winder, GA

Winder Georgia is located east of Atlanta right off of GA Hwy 316 and has a population of well over 15,000 locally. The city was formed later than many and was officially incorporated in 1893 and named after John H. Winder who worked for the local railroad which ran right through the city itself. Winder is a city that is more rural than many cities local to Atlanta, and still has a small town feel. For people who are tired of Atlanta traffic, Winder is not as densely populated as many of the suuburbs of Atlanta, however is growing by leaps and bounds, particularly over the past decade.

Winder is also reasonably close to the University of Georgia in Athens, so it's easy to pop up to Athens to see the 'Dawgs play. On top of that, there are plenty of things to do in Winder. Ft. Yargo is just outside of downtown Winder by a few miles, and if you like old VW's you can visit The Bug Mill which is a local aircooled VW parts shop just a few blocks down from City Hall and owned by the Orr family. You can also always check out the Barrow County Museum if you like history, and you can see what's going on locally at the Colleen O Williams theater or the Innovation Amphitheater.
