Sandy Springs, GA.  A Local History.

Did you know that Sandy Springs, GA is the 6th largest city in the Atlanta Metro area?  It is!  Not only that, but it is one of the cities that has been most recently incorporated in the Atlanta area as well.  Many of the cities around Atlanta were incorporated in the 1800's and have a long history, even often being named after railroad officials, but Sandy Spirngs was incorporated in only 2005!  

The city was a watering stop for Native-Americans initially who frequented it's local spings and quickly became a community where others lived in by the 1800's.  By 1842, the oldest known house was built, the Austin-Johnson house, on Johnson Ferry Road, and that quickly became the town center shortly after.  The original "Sandy Springs" town can be located at Heritage Green, set on 4 acres which is now a park owned and operated by "Heritage Sandy Springs" which is a non-profit that preserves the history of the town. 

The area remained more of a farming community until the 1950's, but I-285 changed everything when it was built in the 1960's.  At that point in time, the first leg of State Road 400 was also built which connected Sandy Springs with Atlanta, and it became a bedroom community of our state's city center. 

Many tried to incorporate the town in 1966, which was when the move began to first incorporate.  Many wanted to annex the town into Atlanta, but others fought for the city to retain its own government, and in 2005, that took place  In a landslide vote--  94% of the residents voted in favor of Sandy Springs incorporating on its own, and Eva Galambos was elected the first mayor of the newly created city.
