In February 1784 Franklin County, which has now been incorporated as part of Gwinnett County, Georgia, was opened for settlement. Lands east of the Appalachee River were all merged into Gwinnett County in 1818. In the Southern part of Gwinnett, which would later be named Grayson. The New Hope/Tribble Mill area and the Haynes Creek or Midway Area were settlements in the early to middle nineteenth century. The McElvaney family operated the Bay Creek post office in their mill, and in 1877 the Georgia Militia District was created and the Grayson area at the time was named the Bay Creek District, being named for a creek that runs through the district which happens to be surrounded with native Bay trees. One Local churches were established with Haynes Creek Primitive Baptist Church starting in April of 1826 and New Hope Methodist Episcopal Church-- which is now called New Hope United Methodist and was organized in 1829.

The train came through in 1898 and Grayson was a stop along the way-- and it ran through 1932. The mayor at the time tried to rename the town area, first calling it Berkeley, but later found that there was another town with that name incorporated in Georgia, and then moved to calling it Graymont-- but there was a post office district with that name-- so finally Grayson was chosen and the name stuck.

Grayson today is a thriving metropolis between Lawrenceville and Loganville GA, with many new homes having been built in the last decade. The train is long gone by now, but Grayson remains a wonderful community to raise a family in, here in Georgia.
